Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass, like other regional passes, is by far the best and most popular way for foreigners to travel in Japan due to the convenience and comfort provided by the trains. It is exclusively for non-residents of Japan and provides substantial savings, especially for long distance travel.
The Japan Rail Pass is valid on all railways, monorails, and most buses operated by the JR Group, with the following exceptions:
- Nozomi and Mizuho Bullet Trains
- Express Bus
- Sleeper Cars or Private Compartments
- Ferry to Busan
If you would like to use any of the above, you have to pay the basic fare and the additional charges (where applicable). Of course, the Japan Rail Pass cannot be used on non-JR services, such as the Tokyo Metro or subway services.
